Skinny Lattes and Suede Boots

  • Jan. 8th, 2008 at 12:31 PM
oh virgin, starbucks
Starbucks debuted their "skinny drinks" in the New Year, and there is some controversy regarding the term "skinny latte" leads to self-esteem issues, political correctness and size discrimination which I think is stupid. How come there is no uproar for "skinny jeans"? The term "skinny" used in accordance to describe non-fat milk is not new, and I have heard this term before Starbucks put it on their menu. I think Starbucks, by putting "skinny" lattes on the forefront of the menu actually encourages people to make healthier choices by subsituting skim milk, instead of 2% milk and using sugar free syrups and I'm all for that.

I'm feeling poor from spending money on myself in December (2 pairs of jeans, a top, a haircut, a massage and dinner really add up) and I just bought all my law textbooks today. However, I'm still wanting a pair of suede boots in black and dark brown from Zappos that Blake Lively from Gossip Girl wore on the show.

EDIT: One of my law classmates got engaged over Christmas Break, although she was expecting it. The first thing I said to her, "Can I see your hand?" and immediately started asking questions about the wedding, and the colors she is going to pick. I never thought I would be one of *those* girls that get excited over another's engagement. She hasn't picked out her dress, but has done other preparation (location, DJ, florist). However, buying bridal magazines and picking out the dress would be the first things I would do.

the term skinny is really unnecessary actually- they've had sugar free syrups and nonfat milk for some while. now i just don't have to irritate others by saying "sugarfree nonfat caramel latte" and instead just 1 word- skinny.

I agree with both of your points.

I just ordered one today, and the type of milk doesn't make a difference to me in terms of taste.

I was reading at Starbucks on Sunday, and everyone was saying "skinny", and I was thinking "What the hell is with these people? Say 'skim' or 'nonfat'!" I had no idea it was an official change!

LOL - it's also probably because of the New Year's Resolutions to eat healthier that prompted more people to say "skinny"

actually...
there was actually a lot of people pissed off about 2 years ago when a popular clothing store in downtown Vancouver advertised skinny jeans with a window display that said something like "we *heart* skinny" -- referring to jeans, of course, not skinny people. But anyway, a lot of people were offended not only by the sign, but also the term being used to describe the jeans.

my mom has always called non-fat lattes "skinny" lattes. i'm sure she's happy that the term's official now, although she may lose some points in originality :) that's so exciting that your friend got engaged. i need to focus more on living in the moment & having a blast being young, but i can't wait until i'm done w/ school & everything & people start getting engaged! so fun.

When I graduated school w/ my Business degree, I was looking forward to working. When I was working, I couldn't wait to go to law school. I never win.
