When I was in high school, I took International Baccalaureate (IB) English and History.  Basically, it was for the "smart" kids.  In grade 10, we studied the book To Kill a Mockingbird extensively.  One of things we discussed were the meaning of names, such as the name Finch of Atticus Finch.  I was reading the National Post today, and it turns out Harper Lee's mother's maiden name was Finch.  Therefore, there was probably no symbolism for the name "Finch".  In IB English, I often thought we attributed way more meaning to things than what the author intended, and I think this is proof.

I completely agree...I always thought that the crazy symbolism was a stretch at best.

Too bad, we learned this fact 12 years too late to argue w/ Ms. Douglas.

having an english major, i totallllly agree that some classes/teachers try to make us find symbolism where there isn't any. so annoying & unproductive in terms of learning, i think.

Ha, I totally thought that you were going to say the opposite, because you have an English major.

I did IB English for two years and we studied so many boring things... also I analysed this poem for class and the teacher said my OPINION about what one line meant to me was wrong. What a stupid witch. I'm allowed to think what I like! Anyway, I regret doing the IB a little bit because there was just no point.. didn't end up going anywhere!

The only thing I gained from IB was gaining two guy friends that I would not have met, have I had not taken IB.

The reason I took IB, was the person that was in charge of the IB program in my high school made it sound like we could skip first year university classes. However, she failed to mention that you needed to get a perfect score on the final exam to do so (a 7?) and she failed to mentioned how difficult it was to get a perfect score.
